A Peruvian footballer has been hospitalised and is thought to be in a serious condition after being struck by lightning during a cup match on Tuesday. Joao Contreras was hit by an electrical discharge as he waited for the second half of the semi-final game between his team Sport Aguila and Fuerza Minera to kick off
Despite initial reports claiming Contreras had died, South American news outlets are now suggesting the player is in hospital in a serious condition.
A linesman was also hit by the lightning bolt and received medical attention afterwards, although he escaped with minor injuries.
The Copa Peru match was suspended following the incident with the score tied at 1-1.
