The signing of Dejan Lovren has backfired somewhat for Liverpool, as the Croatian has made more defensive errors in the Premier League this season than anyone else – while Southampton haven’t made any.
The former Lyon man was one of three players that the Reds pinched from St. Mary’s in the summer, and while he was touted as a future captain in some quarters, he hasn’t quite lived up to that billing just yet.
In fact, saying he’s underachieved so far is something of an understatement, as statistics courtesy of Squawka.com suggest that the Croat’s four mistakes make him the most error-prone defender in the Premier League.
Liverpool are experiencing defensive issues as a whole, though, and Alberto Moreno and Martin Skrtel haven’t exactly been solid at the back either.
On the other hand, Southampton’s excellent start can be attributed to their defensive work – they haven’t made any mistakes at the back so far this season, and they’ve only conceded five times – six less than Premier League leaders Chelsea.
Lovren undoubtedly needs time to fully settle in to his new surroundings, but Reds fans will be hoping for some improved performances pretty soon.
